Personal Information
- 1955
- Born.
- Studied painting and illustration at Manchester Polytechnic, B.A. Illustration in 1978.
- Worked as a freelance illustrator, then as a mural painter and specialist in trompe l'oeil paint effects. Began working with clay after visiting Mexico and seeing Pre-Columbian ceramics. Studied at Goldsmiths', Postgraduate in Ceramics [distinction] 1992.
- Moved to the North of England and set up a workshop in a converted farm building. Experimented with saggar firing and began to work with porcelain, firing to higher temperatures in order to obtain paler, more luminous colours.
- Hand-builds slowly, smoothing and burnishing the surface and uses salt, seaweed and oxides in the saggar to fume the work. When successful this way of firing gives the work a presence, and the surface and form marry together.
- The work explores the metaphysical relationship between the body and the vessel, primarily through the female torso. The refined and abstracted forms, both in the vessels and in the more sculptural torso pieces, are informed from drawings made from the figure. The chance effects of the firings give a history to the surface, like the effects of life upon the body.
- Teaches both ceramics and drawing.
