“Bryan Kneale’s sculpture has always been welded and constructed.
He has never been interested in any process that does not allow him to work directly with his chosen material: metal.
It is an extremely straightforward way of working and one that he has likened to drawing, but in three dimensions.
As with drawing, this approach to making sculpture allows the artist to be responsive, work quickly or slowly, and to alter the work to follow shifts in ideas without feeling constrained by technique.
The work of Bryan Kneale is also about elegance and the transformation of very ordinary metals into beautiful shapes.
Everyday materials, like steel, take on a new life as Bryan Kneale explores all their possibilities. Through him, we learn that the natural colours of steel extend from deep browns through to silvers and blues and how strong, rich and varied this metal is as a sculptor’s medium.”
