Lewis Noble paints landscapes that are not at all picturesque, for he is in search of a more profound truth, namely the beauty of his landscape's perennial toughness.
He prefers stormy or dramatic vistas in which the horizon is always elusive, its outlines blurred by constantly letting colours emerge with one another, by applying and scraping back with equal vigour, building layers and infusing the whole with a strong sense of rythmic movement. This enhances one of the main concerns in Lewis Noble's work, namely that of transformation: the transformation of sky into land, and the thrusting up of land into sky with ever increasing tension.
As he said in a recent conversation, '. . . . it's about where the land finishes and the sky starts, and how to deal with that.'"
John Casken 2007
In recent years Lewis Noble has focused exclusively on painting the landscape. Working with the landscape provides the opportunity to experiment with ‘pure painting’ whilst retaining an essential grounding in observation.
Lewis Noble creates clear, defined bodies of work, exploring his chosen subject through changing emotions, movement, light & colour.
In 2001 he was the winner of the first National Vickers Art Prize. As such he was afforded the opportunity to be Artist in Residence at prominent locations around Derbyshire including Chatsworth.
Lewis works in a small White Peak village where he lives with his wife & three children.
Lewis Noble is to spend a year working with Chatsworth making a body of work. For more information please look at this link: http://educationaltrust.org/news/news_lewisnoble.htm
