"West Penwith at the southern tip of Cornwall has influenced my work for a period of twelve years, finally making it essential to leave North Yorkshire to live and work on its coastal edge. It is that edge which engages my imagination.

Marks in the landscape left by early inhabitants exist with those made by the elements - marks sometimes shifting or shifted by people, intense light or great storms."

Michael Sheppard,

Michael Sheppard, like other painters before him, has been transfixed by the Cornish landscape. He has a deep emotional response to it, and it is an essential part of his existence.

He speaks of the ‘meeting of edges’ (between land and sea) and often tension can be felt, created by the positioning of solid, often textured, blocks of colour. Veils of paint wash over the canvas relating to the more transient elements of the environment.

Each painting has its own atmosphere, as has each day, in this unique place.
